In order to commemorate the navigation of Panama Canal and promote world trade, America held the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. China attended the exposition with over 10,000 national handicrafts at the first time. The government of Republic China selected Tequ liquor of Luzhou Laojiao, the most well known liquor with the longest cellar age from “Xiaoji Wenyongsheng Distillery”. WEN Xiaoquan, successor of the 11th generation, chose dozens of half kilograms’ aged old cellar liquor that stored in Longquan cave and instilled in gallipots with the single weight of half-kilogram, then sealed by special wooded cases. Through evaluation, the Tequ liquor of Luzhou Laojiao from China not only won the first prize of international famous liquor due to its distinguished quality, long history and the style of mellow and clear, but also gained the golden medal and certificate of the exposition. According to the record of China Food Industry Almanac, it was the first product that won international golden prize of Chinese liquor industry.
In 1916, ZHU De led the army with CAI E to crusade against YUAN Shikai in Sichuan. He wrote a poem when made garrison in Luzhou: “Nation Defense Army led the revolutionary uprising with a grand scene; fortunately the liquor city kept intact and witnessing another passing year.” Thus the name of “liquor city” was originated.
During the period of anti-Japanese war, the development of Luzhou liquor industry reached the historical climate with an increasing number of brewing workshops and liquor cellars, which spread dozens of miles in suburb. There appeared the magnificent scene of 36 distilleries such as Wenyongsheng, Tianchengsheng, Xietaixiang and Chunherong producing pit liquor day and night, with the output ranked No.1 domestically.
